Raissa Siswanto

Co-Chair of Goal 8

My name is Raissa Siswanto, and I am currently a third year student at University of Pelita Harapan, majoring in International Relations with Corporations and International Security as the area of my academic expertise. I am absolutely thrilled to be your Co Chair, and I look forward to getting to know every single one of you during the conference. I was born in Jakarta, however I was fortunate enough to live in Qatar for ten years of my life. This experience of migration had played a major role in my life where it shaped my views on the need to strike a balance between respecting cultural differences and protecting human rights around the world. I’ve been doing MUN since junior high where it is a great platform for me to not only practice diplomacy and learn about the world issues that’s not taught in schools, but to also further develop my knowledge academically and increase my soft skills.

We live in a globalization era where many countries may not be able to keep up with every growth and development. The era increasing skepticism about equal rights and opportunities, human rights, diplomacy, and international law, it is more important than ever to propose innovative and compelling approaches to manage and provide equal opportunities for a decent work (in a humane way possible) to promote and increase the fair economic growth of every country. In Goal no. 8 with the topic of ‘Decent Work and Economic Growth’ it is a great guidance to what we can achieve by 2030 and supporting the SDGs no. 8. In the Global Goals MUN Conference, I believe that it is a excellent platform for youths to come together address their concerns, discuss and negotiate for a solid solution. Youths, are more than capable to make and be part of the change for a better future in many aspects.

I wish you the best of luck and see you in January!

He has also received honorable mentions during his trip to Greece representing Malaysia and the state of Johor as the Ambassador of Denmark. He has been chair for the recent Johor MUN conference and training  which assists the secondary students to be part of MUN.

He realized the duty owed to the community to educate them was way more than just his mere participation which was also why he uptook the position of being the Project Director of Johor International Student Leaders Conference 2017 convening about 1100 students from about 11 different countries to put forth various issues faced by these delegates in their home country.

Dominique Virgil Tuapetel

Chair of Goals No. 6

Esteemed delegates,

My name is Dominique Virgil and I’m currently a final year law student in Faculty of Law, Universitas Indonesia, majoring in Public International Law. I am serving as the Chair for Goal 6 in Global Goals MUN 2018. Before being a chair in Global Goals MUN 2018, I’ve had a long journey being a delegate in numerous MUNs, thus being able to experience all bittersweet memories, as well as the process that has been humbling me so much. Despite starting as an underdog with little experience and less skills, I have managed to snatch numerous awards in MUNs, most notably Diplomatic Commendation in the Legal Committee in Harvard National MUN 2018 in Boston, USA, and Best Delegate in the UN Human Rights Council in The European International MUN 2017 in The Hague, Netherlands. I’ve also been involved in MUN as a Secretariat member. I’ve just finished my duty as the Secretary General of Asia World MUN 2018, while previously served as an Under Secretary-General for Asia Youth International MUN 2017 and Indonesia MUN 2017. I’m currently an Under Secretary-General for Committee Management for Geneva International MUN 2019. My chairing experience also ranges from national to several international MUNs, most notably Director of the Group of 20 (G-20) in The European International MUN 2018 in The Hague, Chairperson of Legal Committee in Markaz United Youth Summit 2018 in India, Director of UN Women in Indonesia MUN 2018, Chair of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in MalayaMUN 2018 and Chair of Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) in the recent Asia Youth International MUN 2018. For me, MUN hasn’t only been able to equip me for my studies throughout my university life, but MUN has also shaped me to who I am today; a person who values differences and respects people regardless of their background and capabilities. MUN for me is not only to win awards; but to build friendship. Awards don’t last forever while friendship does. MUN gives me the chance to meet the most awesome of people from all corners across the globe, and it allows me to break my comfort zone and be better each and every day. Delegates, as cliché as it sounds, MUN will be the best platform for you to improve and learn. Why? Because for me, MUN represents life; full of challenges, problems and impossibilities, but none of them is unconquerable as long as we have the endurance. Thus, make sure that you enjoy every second of your MUN experience here in GGMUN, and to top it off, I’ll also make sure that all of you will enjoy this through the committee sessions later on. Experience worth remembering is the enjoyable experience. The road might be tough, but I and my co-chair will be here to help and guide you.

Looking forward to see you in Kuala Lumpur, delegates! Don’t hesitate to contact me through [email protected] for further inquiries. Good luck!

It wasn’t long before my fondness for MUN conferences started to grow, and before I knew it, I was participating in numerous conferences, not with the aim of winning accolades, but to experience diplomacy and debate. Model United Nations conferences as an academic activity have been of great influence in my life in terms of the exposure and knowledge of pressing world issues. I credit the debating and diplomacy skills I have imbibed over the years to this activity. I believe that MUNs provide a great platform for students to inculcate valuable public speaking skills which are also essential life skills. Throughout the course of the conference I will ensure that each delegate gets a chance to present their views and share their opinions with the committee. Together, we shall move a step closer towards realizing the SDGs and learning a great deal in the process. So prepare for an action packed conference and start researching. All the very best to you!

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were born at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro in 2012. The objective was to produce a set of universal goals that meet the urgent environmental, political and economic challenges facing our world.

The SDGs replace the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which started a global effort in 2000 to tackle the indignity of poverty. The MDGs established measurable, universally-agreed objectives for tackling extreme poverty and hunger, preventing deadly diseases, and expanding primary education to all children, among other development priorities.

For 15 years, the MDGs drove progress in several important areas: reducing income poverty, providing much needed access to water and sanitation, driving down child mortality and drastically improving maternal health. They also kick-started a global movement for free primary education, inspiring countries to invest in their future generations. Most significantly, the MDGs made huge strides in combatting HIV/AIDS and other treatable diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis.

Key MDG achievements

More than 1 billion people have been lifted out of extreme poverty (since 1990)
Child mortality dropped by more than half (since 1990)

The number of out of school children has dropped by more than half (since 1990)
HIV/AIDS infections fell by almost 40 percent (since 2000)

The legacy and achievements of the MDGs provide us with valuable lessons and experience to begin work on the new goals. But for millions of people around the world the job remains unfinished. We need to go the last mile on ending hunger, achieving full gender equality, improving health services and getting every child into school beyond primary. The SDGs are also an urgent call to shift the world onto a more sustainable path.

The SDGs are a bold commitment to finish what we started, and tackle some of the more pressing challenges facing the world today. All 17 Goals interconnect, meaning success in one affects success for others. Dealing with the threat of climate change impacts how we manage our fragile natural resources, achieving gender equality or better health helps eradicate poverty, and fostering peace and inclusive societies will reduce inequalities and help economies prosper. In short, this is the greatest chance we have to improve life for future generations.

The SDGs coincided with another historic agreement reached in 2015 at the COP21 Paris Climate Conference. Together with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, signed in Japan in March 2015, these agreements provide a set of common standards and achievable targets to reduce carbon emissions, manage the risks of climate change and natural disasters, and to build back better after a crisis.

The SDGs are unique in that they cover issues that affect us all. They reaffirm our international commitment to end poverty, permanently, everywhere. They are ambitious in making sure no one is left behind. More importantly, they involve us all to build a more sustainable, safer, more prosperous planet for all humanity.
